METHODS YOU SHOULD NOT USE TO INCREASE DOWNLOAD NUMBERS pt 1
In the last episode, I covered some of the information on the Interactive Advertising Bureau and how the IAB has instituted guidelines for podcasters in relation to their download reporting. These methods have been widely accepted by many podcast hosting platforms and incorporated, basically industry wide.
You would heed well to adhere with the standards if you want to be a podcaster of excellence. In order to accomplish that, here are some unscrupulous methods that some podcasters used to find popular in an attempt to increase their downloads.
Here is my list of ways you should not use to increase your podcast downloads!
- If your URL is currently set to http:// instead of https:// you can automatically increase your download numbers by making that change. All you would have to do is a “find and replace” function in your computer for your downloads.
What a concept, right? WRONG!
When you make that change, ALL of your subscribers will automatically be downloading ALL of your files! That sounds good – on your end…
But for your subscribers, they will receive every single one of your episodes into their feed. They may not want to have all of your episodes downloaded. That could take up a lot of space on their computer!
For example, I have almost 650 episodes of one of my podcasts. If I used this, and let’s say I have 500 subscribers, I could have a potential 325,000 downloads! That sounds great, right?
But, if I lose 300 out of the 500 subscribers because I just “spammed” their account, how long will it take me to build back up to the 500 subscriber level? What about my reputation?
So, although the numbers look good, I did not increase my subscriber base. In fact, I would probably loose subscribers! That is not good for business (no matter what business you are in)!
SO – DO NOT USE THIS METHOD!
- Another method NOT TO DO is using multiple social media posts with the link to your podcast episodes.
Now, don’t get me wrong, social media is a great place to advertise and promote your podcast and your podcast episodes. There is nothing wrong with promoting them once or twice per day on each platform. That’s fine.
What I’m talking about is posting several times per hour, several hours per day, across your social media profiles. Yes, that will get you some additional exposure. Yes, you will get some people who click on the links. Yes, you will see some additional downloads.
But for the majority of the people who see you doing this, you will become a “spammer” in their eyes. Some may drop you from their “follow” list. Some may just “block you.” Some may report you.
The effort it takes to do this (even if you use one of those auto-poster services) is not worth the negativity you will receive when you do this.
SO, DO NOT USE THIS METHOD!
